We would need to move to a space of gesture and performance if we would want to imagine a de-colonial, critical graphic design. We would have to allow expression to erupt into poetry and storytelling as a way to contest normative forms of design. When different languages are involved, world-making becomes plural. For De-centering English, three designers come together to make sense of how the visual might be interpreted without relying on the structures that uphold linguistics. What multiplicity of forms emerge from such conversations? How do we map this diversity of overlapping margins?

ถ้าพูดถึงชื่อ สันติ ลอรัชวี คนรักงานกราฟิกดีไซน์คงรู้จักเขาเป็นอย่างดีในฐานะนักนักออกแบบกราฟิกชาวไทย ผู้ร่วมก่อตั้งสตูดิโอกราฟิกดีไซน์ แพรคทิเคิล (Practical Design Studio) ผลงานของเขามักจะเป็นการสำรวจความเป็นระบบภาษาของกราฟิกและไทโปกราฟี หรือการออกแบบตัวพิมพ์ เขามักจะนำสิ่งเหล่านี้มาใช้ในการสื่อสารและแสดงออกทางความคิดของเขา 

ผลงานของสันติที่หลายคนน่าจะเคยคุ้นตาคืองานแบบปกหนังสือหลากหลายเล่ม ไม่ว่าจะเป็นปกหนังสือชุด Wisdom Series อันประณีตงดงาม ของ ภิญโญ ไตรสุริยธรรมา แห่งสำนักพิมพ์ openbooks หรือปกหนังสือ มูซาชิ อันเรียบง่ายเฉียบคม และโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ผลงานการออกแบบปกหนังสือ สิทธารถะ ของ เฮอร์มาน เฮสเซ ฉบับภาษาไทย ที่ออกแบบและผลิตอย่างประณีต พิถีพิถัน และงดงามไม่ต่างอะไรกับงานศิลปะ โดยพิมพ์ในจำนวนจำกัดเพียงแค่ 1,000 เล่ม และเปิดให้เข้าไปจับจองทางออนไลน์ ซึ่งก็สร้างปรากฏการณ์ด้วยการที่หนังสือถูกจองจนหมดเกลี้ยงภายในเวลาแค่ 12 ชั่วโมง

สันติได้รับรางวัล Designer of the Year สาขาการออกแบบกราฟิกจากนิตยสาร Wallpaper* และกรมส่งเสริมการค้าระหว่างประเทศ กระทรวงพาณิชย์ เขายังเป็นนักออกแบบกราฟฟิกชาวไทยคนแรกที่ได้รับเชิญให้เข้าร่วมงาน Graphic Trial โครงการประจำปีที่สำรวจความก้าวหน้าด้านกราฟิกดีไซน์และการแสดงออกเกี่ยวกับศิลปะการพิมพ์ที่จัดขึ้นที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ Printing Museum ที่โตเกียว ในปี 2018

เขายังทำผลงานที่คาบเกี่ยวระหว่างพรมแดนของศิลปะและงานดีไซน์ ดังเช่นในผลงานชุด A State of Mind (2020) ที่สื่อสารแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับสภาวะจิตใจและความเป็นตัวตนผ่านกระบวนการทำงานกราฟิกดีไซน์อันซับซ้อนไปจนถึงเรียบง่ายในรูปแบบของงานโปสเตอร์ดีไซน์เชิงทดลอง ที่ใช้เทคนิคการพิมพ์อันสลับซับซ้อน ทั้งรูปวงกลมและรัศมี ที่ดูนิ่ง สงบ สมดุล ไปสู่รูปที่สะท้อนสภาวะอารมณ์ที่เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตามสภาพแวดล้อมที่เข้ามาปะทะ ทั้งใบหน้ายิ้ม โกรธขึ้ง ขึงขัง โดยตำแหน่งของรูปทรงเรขาคณิตที่แสดงถึงสภาวะอารมณ์เหล่านี้ถูกเปลี่ยนไปอย่างเป็นระบบระเบียบตามหลักตรรกะและคณิตศาสตร์ในงานกราฟิกดีไซน์

Exploring the Possibilities of Graphic Design through Offset Printing

Graphic Trial 2018 represents an attempt to explore the relationship between graphic design and the art of printing in order to discover new forms of expression. Every year, artists on the cutting edge of graphic design experiment with different printing techniques to create groundbreaking works of graphic art for our Graphic Trial exhibitions.

This year marks the 13th Graphic Trial Exhibition.

This exhibition features works by Akira uno, Santi Lawrachawee, Yoshihiro Yagi and Haruyuki Suzuki. Collaborating with them in using offset printing to push the limits of artistic expression were the printing directors at Toppan Printing.

This year’s theme is “Passion”. This is the era of instant global communication, unshackled from the limits of time and space. New sources of creativity are being formed at the intersections through which technologies and ideas flow freely between different peoples and cultures. Witness a artists and Toppan Printing Directors working on the front lines of design.

What is Graphic Trial?

GraphicTrial เป็นนิทรรศการแสดงผลงานโปสเตอร์คุณภาพสูง สนับสนุนโดย Toppan ประเทศญี่ปุ่น โดยนักออกแบบ กับ Toppan จะสำรวจวิธีการและแนวทางการทำงานร่วมกันใหม่ในการพิมพ์ โดยธีมในปีนี้คือ “Passion” – ความกระตือรือร้นไม่มีที่สิ้นสุด แนวคิดสวนทางกับเหตุผล การเสพติด “สิ่งต่างๆ” และอารมณ์อันทรงพลัง เช่น ความรัก ความปรารถนา ความโกรธความเกลียดชัง ความเศร้าโศก และความสุข ถูกนำเสนอผ่านผลงานออกแบบโปสเตอร์จากนักสร้างสรรค์ทั้งสี่คน ถ่ายทอดผ่านการพิมพ์ที่ละเอียดซับซ้อนและปราณีต

Graphic Trial is a high quality printed poster exhibition sponsored by Toppan, Japan.Toppan and top creators came together to explore ways of creating a new collaborative approach to printing.
This yearʼs theme is “Passion”—a strong emotion or boundless enthusiasm, a concept contrary to reason.Addictions to “things” and powerful emotions like love, desire, anger, hate, sorrow, and joy have always driven people to create.The passions of eminent creators have inspired the printing directors at Toppan to express various dimensions of Passion using techniques and sensibilities that embody their hearts.

“TYPE TRIP-The New Asian Graphic Design Exhibition” attempts to explore the relationship between graphic design and typography from eight different Asian cities. Initiated by Japanese design journal typographics ti: in 2011, “TYPE TRIP” began at ddd gallery in Osaka. Not only travelling in Asia, but this project initiated meetings with different talented graphic designers and studios via face-to-face interviews, in the attempt to diverse typographic matters and identity related to their own cities and graphic language. These cities included SEOUL, HONG KONG, SINGAPORE, TAIPEI, SHENZHEN, BANGKOK and BEIJING.
Presented by K11 and in cooperation with DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion (Japan), co-curated by Hong Kong based independent graphic design studio Milkxhake and Japan design unit OOO Projects (Osaka), “TYPE TRIP – The New Asian Graphic Design Exhibition” features typographics ti: and seven graphic designers’ works, aims to build a new cultural platform for contemporary Asian graphic designers to exchange ideas and creativity among eight different cities, and to discover “TYPE TRIP” in a fresh perspective.

Now it has become clear for many people that what we call ‘reality’ is facing a problematic issue in itself. This is a consequence from the age of globalization, when we are overwhelmed with a flood of information that reaching conclusion by one’s own judgment requires tremendous effort. When the world of reality is distorted, it is unsurprising that the world of dream cannot remain unaffected.

Sometimes it is almost impossible to distinguish between the world of reality and the world of dream. Based on this premise, six artists, including Arin Rungjang, Kornkrit Jianpinidnan, Dusadee Huntrakul, Santi Lawrachawee, Jaitip Jaidee and Thanarat Siripidej, were invited to share their personal stories. Collection of various stories being simultaneously presented leads to confrontation in terms of difference and indifference. However, each artist’s dream has its own unique qualities. Being embodied with rationality, cognition, or even pure superstition, all these dreams are compiled and arranged in the Sweet Nightmare exhibition, which reflects the state of paradox in people and society.

The six artists’ creative process in conceptual art stands on the line between reasoning and emotional expression to convey stories from various cognitions, experiences or assumptions through different art media. The exhibition will be on show from 9 November – 19 December 2013, with the opening reception on 9 November 2013, 6 pm, at Bangkok University Gallery, City Campus.

“Typographics ti:” Japan Typography Association newsletter has been featuring state-of-the-art graphic design spans Asia for two years from April 2011. Featured with the theme of “type trip” / “Osaka”. Reconfigured gallery space ranging from designer thought process, the exhibition designers and Asian members of the Japanese editing and production, in three dimensions, and the magazine production process and co-produced the “type trip to Osaka” together exhibition. Talk to the venue such as holding interviews the gallery, facing a designer of each city, we will introduce the network and graphic design of the latest situation in Asia.

in collaboration with Bali Creative Community

To participate in joining in campaigning World Silent Day
movement through poster design.

The posters will be exhibited in Bangkok Art & Culture Center
conjunctioning with Bangkok Design Festival 2010 in 20-30 November,
Epiwalk Creative Fairground in Jakarta in November as well and
Bali Creative Festival in December.

Wonderful Thai Friendship

Wonderful Thai Friendship is the first art exhibition at WTF Gallery.
The show aims to introduce the exhibition space to the local
community and Bangkok people at large. The exhibition takes the
inspiration from a typical “summer show” in New York City,
where a diverse collection of artists and work is organized around
a theme — often playful or irreverent. Wonderful Thai Friendship
may be found in the commentary of the works themselves or from
the simple fact many of the creators and curator are indeed good
friends (or not!) Summer is a time to escape pressures and the
heat (from the weather or man-made.) WTF will be a cool oasis in
the city during these steamy months!

The exhibition features 13 artworks by 13 artists —
Thais or reside in Thailand, both established and up-and-coming.
The exhibition is comprised of varied contemporary media:
drawing, printmaking, mixed-media, video installation,
photography and performance.

All works are the artists’ signature pieces and handpicked
by Chattiya Nitpolprasert, the young Thai curator who co-curated
Thai Pavillion at Venice Biennale 2009.
